Nicholas Moses DePue and John Depue John DEPUE, our ancestor has been attached as a son of this family with some reservations. He is found with this family in volume 2 of the Depuy Family History by Jean Smith. In a letter from Jean she states that she found two papers in the Monroe County Historical Society listing John as a member of this family, one had a question mark by it. Both papers list his wife as Margaret not Mary, but from Walpack records we know his wife was Mary as this is the way it is listed on the baptism records of all their children. Jean speculates that possibly Mary and Margaret are sisters but in the work on the VanGorden family received from Lois Stewart, no Margaret is listed with Mary’s family. In Hoff’s History of the Depui Family on page 2 is a record for a Moses Depuy married to a Margaret VanGorden. I think this is Moses the brother of John. Until we can prove or disprove the connection John’s being listed with this family is questionable.1

Nicholas Du Puy was also known as De Pui. He and his brother Francois were probably born in Paris. About 1651 they were forced to flee because of religious persecution. They went to Holland were Nicholas married Cathrina De Vos. Nicholas prospered and records show he had property in New York City, Staten Island, Ulster Co., NY and Bergen Co., NJ. Nicholas and Cathrina were members of both the French Church and Dutch Reformed Church and this may help explain the differences in Cathrina’s surname, de Vos is the Dutch word for fox and Renard is the French. Nicholas will in 1691 mentions his wife and children John, Moses, Aaron, Susanna, and Nicholas.1 Nicholas Du Puy was also known as Du Puis. Moses De Puy1

Moses De Puy was born in France c 1657 and emigrated to New Amsterdam with his parents in 1662, aged 5 years. He removed to Ulster Co., N.Y. and was a pioneer settler in the Town of Rochester. He received a land grant in the township Sept.22,1703. His will is not recorded but it is known that he was living in 1748, when on Dec. 1, his son, Nicholas , of Shawnee-on-Delaware, Pa. told the Moravian missionary Sven Rosen, that his father was in his 89th year and had 110 descendants. He probably lived until January 1754, as on January 30th of that year, Moses Depuy of Rochester requested the use of the Dutch Reformed Church funeral pall for his father. Moses DePuy was his areas' leading citizen in terms of service, settling of the lands and in personal wealth. He also was a man of serious religious concern. In summary - brief and cursory, 17 Sept 1689 he signed the oath of allegiance as an English subject; June 1703 he was one of the three trustees receiving the Patent for Rochester (Ulster County, N.Y.) from Queen Anne, and served as trustee for the terms; 1709-1729 served 3 terms as assessor; 1712-17 served as supervisor of Rochester; was an Ulster County delegate to the N.Y. Colonial General assembly c1750-1759; and was a member of the County Court; served in the military. He acquired major areas of real estate from 1697 for many years thereafter including, in 1704 the 'Keyser-ryck' tract on a part of which the little village of Kyserike now stands. His Homestead' was uniquely sited on an unusual tract of land near the Rondout Creek, and he also operated, along with other interests an area gristmill. His wealth appears in tax records from 1711/12 over a period of years; much the wealthiest and also second wealthiest freeholder in the Rochester region.1
